With a medical school, major medical complex, and research centers, Grand Forks has a strong biomedical industry. Founded in 1905, the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences is the only medical school in North Dakota. The Biomedical Sciences Department at the University of North Dakota (UND) offers degrees in Anatomy & Cell Biology, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Microbiology, and Pharmacology, Physiology, & Therapeutics. Both undergraduate and graduate students are able to participate in lab research in their chosen field. UND is also a leader in research across a variety of biomedical fields including addiction, aging, cancer, epigenetics, host-pathogen interactions, lipid metabolism, neuroscience and obesity. With 75 active research projects, 62,000 square feet of research space and $9 million dollars in competitive grant funding, the biomedical department continues to thrive at UND.
