As a four-year, public university with an enrollment of more than 1,800 students (approximately 900 on campus and 900 online), UMC proudly carries on a tradition of a century of educational service to Northwestern Minnesota. Since its establishment as an institution of higher learning in 1966 and its transition to offering baccalaureate degree programs in 1993, UMC has been a small campus offering big University of Minnesota degrees. UMC provides individual attention and mentorship and offers an active, hands-on approach to teaching and learning that puts students ahead of the competition.

Lake Region State College offers two academic associate degree programs: Associate in Arts and Associate in Science. These degrees match bachelor's degree programs with an easy transfer. They also offer Associate in Applied Science degree programs in many career/technical programs. Some of the career and technical programs also offer diplomas or certificates. Some certificate-based academic programs combine classroom instruction with hands-on experience to teach students a specific trade or skill.
